The Fairfax Bridge, south of Carbonado on SR-165, was dedicated on December 17, 1921. The one-lane bridge, built in 1921 at a cost of $80,000, spans the Carbon River Canyon and provides access to Fairfax and the Carbon River entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park. Officially named the James R. O'Farrell Bridge, it is one of only two extant three-hinged steel arches in the State of Washington and at 240 feet, was the highest bridge in the state at the time of its construction. TPL 3656.
